“They were able to help after two other companies gave me the run around.”
We were in the process of preparing our taxes when a powerful line of thunderstorms rolled through the area. Even though we thought we were using adequate surge protection our companies Compaq DC 5100 got hit. The repair tech tells us all we need to do is replace the power supply. He said he could order it, it would take 10 days and the total price for all would be $225.00. The time and cost seemed crazy and we figured we could find the part on our own. So we paid him $75.00 and ordered the refurbished part, ourselves, online for 9.99$ with free overnight delivery. The power supply worked great, problem is the computer was still not working. $75.00 wasted so far. Another PC repair shop tells me that I could have a variety of components causing trouble and as our machine was fairly old, we’d be better off with a whole new computer. All we really cared about was our data. My office manager (wife) was a frantic head case as she had been careless about backup and most of our crucial company documentation could not be reassembled from other sources. Right then and very clearly, I asked the guy, can’t I just have my data recovered we don’t need the equipment and our budget is tight. He says that data recovery is ridiculously expensive and time consuming and that putting stuff in a new unit was all that was needed. So, I fork over another $1250.00 for a computer our company could do without and $375.00 for repairs and expedited service. The next day we get the call to pick up our new unit. There is another person working in the shop today. He had the unit all packed up and declares, it’s ready to go. We insisted he unpack and show up our missing files, surprise. Nothing!!! We felt like our data was being held hostage at this point. The guy agrees to waive the service charge but will not even consider a discount on the $1250.00 for new equipment we never needed.
Our daughter sent out an ‘SOS’ to her online buddies and got good feedback about a recovery provider, My Data Recovery Lab. We’re just praying now that our insurance company would cover some of our costs. We were already out of pocket over $1300, still had no data, and expected to spend at least that much more for the recovery.
We could not have been more wrong. The folks at MDRL were beyond great. We submitted our request online and a tech guy called me back within 30 min. He was really clear about how the process works. Plus they had a no data recovered, no charge policy. 24 hours after sending them our data they called me back. They gave me a firm quote, which we found fair, and told me it would take up to 4 days to do the work. What really sold me on these guys was how honestly they answered all my questions. We were frantic to get our files back, so I asked if there was any way we could get it sooner. They MDRL guy said they didn’t want to give false expectations but would make every attempt to get it to us ASAP. They also had the option of expedited service, where they would assign 24/7 attention to it. We decided to go the traditional route. 48hours later, the tech guy calls me. All of our files restored and ready to be returned. I only wished I had just gone to them first. What we really needed was our data. All this other mess with the PC shops and equipment repair/replacement was a waste of time and money. Sometimes it’s just that simple. If you need data, go to a data recovery company. I highly recommend My Data Recovery Lab.
